A Historic Day for Equality: Thailand’s Senate Approves Marriage Equality

Home » A Historic Day for Equality: Thailand’s Senate Approves Marriage Equality

Thailand will become the first nation in Southeast Asia to legalize same-sex marriage after the kingdom’s Senate approved a marriage equality bill on Tuesday. The Senate voted overwhelmingly in favor of passing the bill following a final reading, with 130 senators voting in favor and only four members opposing the bill. The law will then come into effect 120 days after it is published in the Royal Gazette.

The bill grants LGBTQ+ couples the same legal rights and recognition as heterosexual couples, including inheritance and healthcare decision-making rights.  According to the bill, two individuals above the age of 18, regardless of gender, will be allowed to marry, with one party being able to seek compensation from the other if they are to be divorced due to infidelity.

This move not only addresses the legal disparities that LGBTQ+ people face but also serves as a validation for individuals who have been denied the same rights and protections as their non-LGBTQ+ peers.

However, while the upcoming changes in law are poised to grant the LGBTQ+ community rights and access to services on par with heterosexual partners, it is simply a first step. Substantial work remains to combat social stigma, harassment, and abuse against LGBTQ people, as well as other administrative issues such as cross-border recognition of LGBTQ+ marriages, visas for foreign spouses, and updating legal documents.

Nonetheless, we expect that passing this bill means full equality and that this landmark decision will trickle down to visas, immigration, and other administrative matters.
