Allan McKinnon


Mr. McKinnon brings extensive experience in trade, investment, and diplomacy, having served as Australia’s Ambassador to Thailand from January 2019 to mid-2022. Prior to his tenure as Ambassador, he held several key positions including Deputy Secretary and later National Security Advisor at the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (PMC). His overseas roles include Deputy Head of Mission and Counsellor at the Australian Embassy in Tokyo.

He also held the position of Deputy Commander for Joint Agency Task Force – Operation Sovereign Borders, and several First Assistant Secretary roles within the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), including International Security Division, Diplomatic Security, Information Management and Services Division, and Corporate Management Division. Additionally, he served as an Advisor in the Office of the Trade Minister.

Mr. McKinnon is a graduate of the Australian National University, holding Bachelor of Arts in Asian Studies and Economics, along with a Diploma in Law from the Legal Practitioners Board. In his role at Silk Legal, Mr. McKinnon will provide expertise in both inbound and outbound investment services, as well as offer strategic counsel to facilitate the firm’s expansion into Thailand, Dubai, and the USA. He will also represent Silk Legal and Silk Advisory in dealings with the Thai and Australian governments and their respective agencies.
